PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scanning uses a special radio pharmaceutical that tracks the degree of body tissue metabolism. It’s particularly useful for detection of many types of cancer and to check for tumor spread. This modality is also used to assess for response to treatment in certain type of tumors to guide future therapy.
Prior to your scan, you will receive an injection of the radio pharmaceutical and then rest quietly for a period of time prior to the study. This rest period limits activity in normal tissue and allows time for the agent to localize abnormal tissue if present. Depending on your physician’s orders, you may also receive an intravenous injection for the CT component during the exam.
PET/CT is performed at our Medical Imaging Center office, 5008 Brittonfield Parkway in East Syracuse. We are accredited in PET/CT by the American College of Radiology.
